At the beginning of June, Arthur started rolling from his belly onto his back. It seems that the train really got rolling after that. Once he could do both belly to back and back to belly transitions, he seemed to feel safe with getting up a bit and trying to crawl. Then, just a couple days before his 6 month birthday, Arthur managed to do a successful army crawl. He still likes to play around with getting high up on his tippy toes, but doesn't use this posture for forward motion. He's also been sitting by himself for 10 second bursts, but just last night at the park, I caught him sitting for much longer than that.
The teeth that have been slowly rising, have also finally popped through. The first to make a hole was his right front lower (about one week ago), then two days later the left started up through the gums. So, two teeth in one go has not been so bad. I think his cuteness quotient will be ridiculously high once those little pearly whites are easier to spot.
Arthur's been making a lot of sounds that are more word-like and he especially loves it when Elsie replies to him in his language. He has a couple of times every day where he just feels silly and anything you do to entertain him sends him giggling. During our trip out east, Kiersten liked to get very near his face and repeatedly say "hi!". As wearisome as it was for the adult holding Arthur, he reveled in it and it made him smile every time.
The 10 hour journey that we made in June-July was the most we have traveled with him so far. After so many disastrous car rides with Elsie when she was a baby, Martin and I had really lost our appetite for such an adventure, but finances being few meant that the more desirable air travel was not an option. I had the mistaken notion that if we started the journey a bit before bedtime, then the kids would just fall asleep and we could get 3-4 hours driving with them totally unaware. Unfortunately, Arthur is happy to fall asleep for naps in the car, but not nighttime sleeping. We stopped 6 times on the way to Quebec City that night. Poor Elsie was also quite upset by it all because she was trying to sleep through both Arthur crying and, I think, some leg cramps... not to mention the frequent stops. But we figured it all out and had a mostly uneventful return trip; I think Arthur had some trapped gas that made for a bit of distress which, unfortunately, coincided with a very large thunderstorm that both Martin and myself became soaked in.
Other items:
- Weight July 20th 20lbs and 15 oz
- Length July 20th 71 cm
- Approximately 3 naps/day, but sometimes 4, if the morning wake up comes early.
- Sleeping fairly well at night, but nursing plenty which keeps me wanting more sleep.
